Various - Sound City: Real To Reel
When the movie was announced with Dave Grohl as director, I was psyched, but I nearly fell off my chair when I saw what the soundtrack would look like.
This album holds 11 songs that were all made specifically for this movie and only with musicians who at some point have recorded music at the Sound City Studio. And those are some of rock’s finest artists! It features Dave Grohl (obviously), Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Robert Levon Been of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Paul McCartney (who actually hadn’t recorded anything in Sound City prior to this… but it’s Paul McCartney), Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, Corey Taylor of Slipknot as well as Brad Wilk & Tim Commerford of Rage Against The Machine and many, many more.
If recall the process correctly, a handful of musicians (always with Dave Grohl) would play in Grohl’s studio (recorded on equipment from the closed Sound City Studio) and in one day they’d have to compose and record a song. And that’s supposedly how every song on this album was made. And it works - it rocks hard and it rocks good.
Some personal favorite tunes of mine are the opener “Heaven And All” featuring Levon Been, which sounds a lot like something that Black Rebel Motorcycle Club could’ve done, “Mantra” with Grohl, Homme and Reznor that’s essentially quiet and beautiful through the most part, but gradually builds up and it really shows the qualities of all three musicians - and finally “Cut Me Some Slack”, that’s essentially played by Nirvana fronted by Paul McCartney instead of Kurt Cobain!
If you like solid rock music, this is an essential album and a must-buy. If you’re into the history of rock music as well, I can highly recommend checking out the movie as well - you can buy it here for $7.99 (which includes HD download + bonus stuff).
